Abstract

Alkali metal salts of carboxylic acids of the formula wherein R is a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, aralkyl, aryl or heterocyclic group, R1 is an alkyl, aralkyl or aryl group, R2 is an alkoxy, aralkoxy or aryloxy group, and R3 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group or together with R1 constitutes a -(CH2)3- or -(CH2)4-group, are prepared by refluxing a mixture of an alkali metal salt of an a -amino acid of the formula <FORM:1034788/C2/1> and a b -substituted unsaturated ester of the formula <FORM:1034788/C2/2> where X is an amino or substituted amino group, in a C1 to C5 alcohol.
