[Also in Division B5] A pipe cutter comprises a non-extensible flexible element 10 carrying a plurality of cutters 16 for circumferential engagement with a pipe to be cut, and having one end connected to a cylinder 28 having a head 48, and the other end connected to a piston-rod 22 of a piston reciprocable in the cylinder, with a chamber 50, Fig. 3 (not shown) in the cylinder head adapted to receive an explosive cartridge and firing mechanism 54 in the head, whereby the explosive force on the piston head contracts the cutters 16 into the pipe. The connection between the one end of the element 10 and the cylinder is by a lever 20 which is pivoted on trunnions 30 on the cylinder and has hooks 26 which engage the pivot pins 14 of the links 12. A second lever 18 is pivotally connected to the other end of the element 10 and the piston-rod 22. Each lever has notches 36, 38 which engage fulcrum pins 32, 34 adjustably mounted on a threaded rod 40, the required force is applied to the pipe by selection of the appropriate notches, and the hand wheel 44 enables the cutters 16 to be brought into close engagement with the pipe before the device is actuated. Resilient pads in the end of the cylinder reduce the shock on the piston at the end of its stroke. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), an open-sided cylindrical frame 60 carries a hook 62 pivoted thereto, and the frame is integral with a threaded shank 64 which receives the cylinder 66. Rotation of the hand wheel 68 moves the cylinder 66 relative to the hook 62. The piston-rod has an enlargement 84 which strikes a resilient bumper 86 at the end of the piston travel.
