Abstract

1,033,743. Packaging-machines. R. KIRSTEN. Nov. 21, 1963 [Nov. 23, 1962], No. 46085/63. Heading B8C. A machine which packs articles into cartons is adjustable to deal with cartons of varying width and length and comprises a conveyer having chains 18-21 and parallel walls 1, 2, 3, wall 2 being movable transversely between walls 1 and 3, to adjust for various lengths of cartons, and carries with it chains 18, 19 and a shaft 38 which drives elements connected thereto, these elements performing operations on the adjacent ends of the cartons. Chains 18-21 carry fixed flights 22-25, Fig. 2 (not shown), and chains 18 and 20 may be moved relative to chains 19 and 21 to vary the distance between adjacent flights in order to accommodate cartons of various widths. Wall 2 is moved by rotation of spindles 12, 13 and is guided by bushes 4, 5 slidably mounted on rods 6, 7. The machine is driven by a variablespeed motor 27 via a main shaft 30, the chains deriving an intermittent motion from a Maltesecross transmission 39, 40. A pusher 45, Fig. 4 (not shown), which -inserts articles into the open end of each carton adjacent wall 3, derives its motion from a shaft 33 via a cycloid gear 52, 56, 57 and directs the articles along a feed channel 47 which is movable at timed intervals towards and away from the mouth of each carton to facilitate the insertion. Numerous operating elements 60-75, Fig. 5 (not shown), for erecting and closing the cartons and their respective actuating cams 76-82 are mentioned, but their mode of operation is not particularly described.
