Abstract

Transparent soap bars are prepared by working a liquid neat soap composition having 6.5-24% total trans-acid radicals therein, based on the total fat charge, to convert mechanical energy into heat energy causing a temperature rise to within the range 100-110 DEG F., the moisture and salt contents being adjusted prior to the end of the working to provide 14-17.5% of moisture and 0.2-0.8% of soap-compatible alkali metal salt in the finished bar; and compacting the soap composition into bar form. The salt may be NaCl, KCl, Na2SO4, sodium silicate or sodium tripolyphosphate, and the compositions may also contain free alkali, free fatty acid, lanolin, sorbitol, and other conventional additives. In a typical example a soap stock comprising 20% coconut oil, 40% tallow, and 40% white grease (the total stock containing about 14% transacid radicals) is converted into a sodium soap.
