Abstract
1,032,677. Packaging-machines. BEMROSE & SONS Ltd. April 26, 1965 [Jan. 25, 1964], No. 3308/64. Heading B8C. Flat carton blanks as shown in Fig. 1 are supplied from a stack to a station 1, Fig. 2, on a turntable 10 of an intermittently rotated forming, filling and closing machine which, at station 2, forms the blank to channel-shape and pre-creases the ends, fills articles P on to the formed blank at station 3, raises the lid and closes it at stations 4 and 5 respectively and ejects the closed carton at station 6. A movable suction device 32, Fig. 4 (not shown), withdraws a blank from the stack 31 (at station 1) and places it on a forming member 20, 21 where pins 22 register with notches in side gussets g, h of the blank. A die 40, Fig. 5 (not shown), descends causing the side members of the blank to be turned up (at station 2), and a crease a on a base T to be flexed by a fixed member 45. The front wall L2 of a lid L is turned up, gussets i, j being broken simultaneously with gussets g, h which are engaged by spring- loaded balls 48. Rebates 49 in the forming member 20, 21 hold down the partially erected container. The artieles P are fed in (at station 3) either by an automatic pusher 50 or by hand. A fixed blade 52, Fig. 8 (not shown), turns up the end T2 of the carton (at station 4), the lid L being raised and turned over by a roller 61 operated by fluid pressure cylinder 57 through a rack and pinion 55, 56. Fixed ploughs 65-68, Fig. 9 (not shown), locate the carton (at station 5), and a plate 70 carrying tongues 71 is lowered to support the carton back wall. A ram 75, Fig. 10 (not shown), causes a nosepiece 79 to engage the carton tongue L3 against the slit T3, enabling the lid to be pressed home by a ram 80. A cam-operated arm 85 ejects the filled and closed carton (at station 6), and heat may be applied, either on ejection or subsequently, to heat-seal pre-coated areas of the carton. Stations 1, 2 and stations 3, 4 may be combined respectively.
