Abstract

1,032,074. Feeding webs. PRINTING, PACKAGING & ALLIED TRADES RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. March 2, 1965 [March 9, 1964], No. 9837/64. Heading B6B. A web tension sensing device comprises a fixed bar 2 formed with a central duct 6 which is connected to an external source of fluid pressure via a pipe 7. The duct 6 communicates via a restricted passageway 8 and a chamber 9 with a shallow recess 10 formed in the surface of the bar 2. A fluid pressure cushion 33 is formed between bar and the travelling web 1. Variations in web tension produce pressure variations in the fluid pressure cushion 33 and these pressure variations are sensed by a spring-loaded slide valve via a pipe 12 communicating with the chamber 9. The slide valve has a spindle 15 with four lands 16 which co-operate with five annular recesses 14a to 14e. The two outside recesses a and e act as exhaust ports and the centre recess c acts as an inlet port or conversely. The lands and recesses are arranged so that any two adjacent pairs of recesses communicate for a particular position of the spindle 15. Recesses b and d communicate with a piston-cylinder arrangement 28 via pipes 26 and 27 which actuates a brake shoe arrangement as shown. The pipes 26 and 27 may communicate with a controller for a motor, such as an hydraulic motor, which drives web feeding devices or a web-roll spindle. In an alternative sensing device, Fig. 2 (not shown), the shallow recess 10 is filled with a porous-material insertion 58, such as sintered bronze, so that the restriction 8 is not required. Variation in the pressure of the cushion may be detected with a diaphragm 60, one side of which is in direct contact with the fluid pressure cushion, the other side of which is in communication with a constant pressure source via a restriction 63 and a nozzle 61, so that the diaphragm will act as a " flapper valve." The pipe 65 communicates with the slide valve. For flimsy material webs such as paper webs, the fluid medium may be air and with webs of a material such as metal the fluid medium may be a liquid such as oil.
