946,342. Measuring tension. BRITISH CELLOPHANE Ltd. May 17, 1962 [June 7, 1961], No. 20600/61. Heading G1W. An apparatus for measuring tension in a web comprises an arcuate surface round which the web is passed, apertures in the surface through which gas under pressure is supplied to provide a supporting gaseous cushion between the web and the surface, a gas supply means, and one or more pressure measuring devices to determine the pressure of gas in the cushion at one or more selected points, which pressure is related to the tension in the web. In Fig. 3 the tube 1 has three rows of apertures 5 and there are six manometers 12<SP>1</SP> to measure the pressure in the gas cushion. The web tension is measured without the web ever coming in contact with the solid arcuate surface. The tension in open mesh webs such as loosely woven fabrics cannot be measured, but closely woven fabrics are readily supportable. The arcuate surface should have sufficient area to permit a change of direction of the web through an angle of at least 40 degrees and up to 180 degrees.
