Abstract

A jet loom (Figs. 1, 3, 4, not shown) has a picking device comprising a tube 4 in. the shape of a loop, hauling an inwardly directed slot 7 in the area bounded by the loop and having plates 8, 9 that enclose the loop and slot 7. In operation air is admitted to the tube at A and a thread clamp 2 is opened so that the weft F is carried around the tube until it reaches a photo-electric device 13 which operates to close the clamp 2 which is fully closed when the weft reaches the exit E of the tube. Continued admission of air with the clamp 2 closed causes the weft to traverse between the plates 8, 9 until it extends directly between the inlet 6 and exit E and is fully picked into the shed. A cutter 14, at the exit E, is then operated and a hook 17 is swung to the dotted line position taking with it the weft end which then lies wholly in the first portion of the tube ready for the next pick. A collar 24 may be slid around the tube to partially block the slot 7 and control the length of pick. A second embodiment (Figs. 5 to 7, not shown) uses a double-coiled tube 35 with butterfly-value controlled air admission and has a weft feeder comprising rollers 31, 32 which feed the weft over a cooperating portion D to E and have a cam 44 and recess 45 with withdraw the yarn after severence, in place of the hook 17 of the first embodiment. A third embodiment (Figs. 8 to 10, not shown) has jets on both sides of the loom which insert "hairpins" of weft.
