Abstract
Porous detergent tablets are made by uniformly mixing a mixture of a detergent component and additives, e.g. builders, with a decomposable substance comprising ammonium carbonate and/or bicarbonate, moulding the mixture to form a tablet, and heating the tablet at 100-160 DEG C., whereby the decomposable substance decomposes to leave a porous tablet. The surface of the tablet may be treated with steam or water either before or after the heating step. Typical detergent components include soap, sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate, an alkyl phenol/polyethylene oxide condensate and its sulphate, and mixtures thereof. Other components mentioned include starch, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, sodium p-toluene sulphonate, sodium tripolyphosphate, sodium metasilicate, and sodium sulphate.
