1,030,666. Reciprocating pumps and motors. DOWTY TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. April 21, 1965 [April 30, 1964], No. 18096/64. Heading F1A. In an axial or radial piston pump or motor having a revolving cylinder block engaging a ported valve plate which is angularly adjustable to vary the output, each land between the valve plate ports has an opening connected to one of the valve plate ports through a passageway incorporating a non-return valve. For a pump, the openings in the lands act to connect a cylinder on its delivery stroke to the high pressure port, and a cylinder on its suction stroke to the low pressure port, to prevent cavitation or concussion when the valve plate is adjusted to its low-output position. The valve plate is adjustable through about 90 degrees by rack and pinion means which may be automatically actuated by a piston and cylinder.
