Abstract
1,028,791. Vacuum switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Jan. 21, 1963 [Jan. 26, 1962], No. 2548/63. Heading H2B. The invention relates to vacuum switches rated to interrupt a current in excess of 10,000 R.M.S. amperes and provides such a switch with a pair of contacts of a non-refractory metal sufficiently free from gaeous impurities that if these contacts are deeply eroded by arcing in a two-litre chamber evacuated to 10<SP>-5</SP> Torr. the pressure will not rise above 10<SP>-3</SP> Torr. 1/30th of a second after etching has ceased, and a metallic shield surrounding them whose surface area is sufficient to limit the power input (given by 0À7 IaVa) to it to 100 kw./inch<SP>2</SP> during the most severe interruptions within its rating and which is made of a metal whose ratio #k/K is less than 0À085 (where k is thermal diffusivity in in.<SP>2</SP>/sec. and K is thermal conductivity in watts/in. ‹C. at room temperature) and whose thickness is greater than #k/4 inches. Molybdenum, aluminium, copper and silver are suggested as suitable shield materials and optimum thicknesses are quoted for these and other materials. In order to reduce the power input per unit shield area, the effective area of the shield may be increased by corrugations (Fig. 5, not shown); a plurality of upstanding partitions (Figs. 7-9, not shown); or by inserting a number of perforated metal shields in front of the main shield.
