Abstract
1,027,223. Liquid-cooled steam condensers. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. April 22, 1963 [June 25, 1962], No. 24336/62. Heading F4S. [Also in Division B1] A power plant comprises condensers 5, 7 directly connected to the two separate exhaust casings 1, 3 respectively of the low-pressure turbine stage of a steam turbine and containing in condensing chambers 15, 25 banks of straight horizontal tubes 9, 19 expanded at their ends into tube plates 11, 13 and 21, 23 respectively. Inlet and outlet chambers 17, 27 and 18, 28 are provided on the outside of the tube plates for cooling water which passes consecutively through the tube banks between which is placed a mixing vessel 33. The temperature of bank 9 being lower than that of bank 19 the pressure in chamber 15 is maintained lower than that in chamber 25. Condensate in chamber 15 is transferred by pump 37 to a spray device 39 in the upper part of chamber 25 from which it is returned to the feed water system of the steam generating unit by a pump 41. Non- condensable gases flow from chamber 25 to 15 from where they are removed by a steam driven ejector 47. In other embodiments (Fig. 2, not shown), a single bank of tubes which may have one tube plate mounted on a bellows piece to accommodate differential expansion, passes through 2 or 3 condensing chambers formed by partitions in a single condenser and each operating at consecutively higher pressures, the diameter of tubes may be graduated from large at the top of the bank to small at the bottom.
