Abstract

1,025,616. Magnetic holding devices; magnetic structures. GENERAL TIRE & RUBBER CO. Feb. 11, 1963 [Jan. 21, 1962], No. 5466/63. Headings H1H and H1P. [Also in Divisions B5 and E2] A flexible permanent magnet device for use as a door latch comprises a flexible sheet containing permanent magnet material 10 in a plastic matrix in back-to-face contact with a second flexible sheet containing high permeability material 12 in a plastics matrix. The two strips may be bonded together or held in contact by means of an enclosing plastic sleeve 14 to give a greater attractive force than would be obtained from the magnet strip alone. 25-95% by weight of finely powdered (60-mesh sieve or smaller) ceramic ferrite material, e.g. barium or strontium ferrite, mixed with 5-75% by weight of binder material is used to form the permanent magnet strip. A recommended mixture would be 90 parts of finely powdered (100-mesh sieve) and 10 parts of binder. For the high permeability backing strip powdered iron is mixed with the binder material in the same proportions. Any non-magnetic plastic or elastomeric material may be used for the binder material. The permanent magnet strip may -be magnetized before or after assembly and dimensions of suitable strips are given. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification' 903,287 and 950,277.
