Abstract

1,025,293. Converting. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA A.B. Feb. 4, 1963 [Feb. 15, 1962], No. 4408/63. Heading H2F. A mercury arc valve arrangement has two or more discharge paths in parallel, each with its own control grid, different impedances in each path and a control arrangement which ignites the separate discharge paths at different instants. The second path is ignited when the current in the first path reaches a desired value. All the paths except for the first one to ignite, which has the largest impedance in it and is also the last path to cease conducting, require fewer voltage grading grids than the first path because they commutate at a voltage not much greater than the arc drop in the first path. Only the first path commutates at full voltage. The impedances may be anode reactors shunted by damping resistors and temperature-sensitive resistors. The last path to be ignited may have no impedance in it.
