Abstract
1,025,184. Moulds. H. J. DAUSSAN. May 21, 1963 [June 8, 1962], No. 20127/63. Heading B3F. Exothermic material A, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown) backed by heat insulating material B is applied to the exterior of the top of an ingot mould L1. The mould may be of haematite cast iron up to the vicinity of the cavities 5, and its upper end of steel. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the exothermic material A which may be in a paper or plastic bag and the backing B are applied between the mould sleeve 8 and an outer casing 10. In a further modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the materials A and B are contained between the mould body 8a and a collar 10a adjustably mounted thereon. Exothermic materials mentioned comprise wood charcoal, coal, coke, wood sawdust or shavings, potassium or sodium nitrates, manganese dioxide, aluminium shot, powdered iron alloy, clays, sodium silicate cements, tars, pitches. The insulating material B may be porous refractory brick, agglomerates of cellulose waste wood sawdust and shavings, cork etc., impregnated with a fireproofing material such as sodium silicate.
