A rotary needle cylinder knitting machine comprises a device for pulling taut a piece of yarn attached to a fabric being knitted in which a pair of rotary parts 211,40 have a pair of part spherical or part-ellipsoidal faces for gripping the yarn and pulling it taut one of the faces being convex and the other concave. A knife blade 50 is provided for severing the yarn and the severed yarn is removed by suction.
