To enable the loops of the top of a knitted sock incorporating an elastic yarn to be of a length longer than those of the remainder of the sock so as to permit the top to stretch, the stick cam 15 of a circular machine is pivotally mounted at 29 and is controlled by linkage from the cam drum to pivot it into a raised or lowered position to effect the variation in the draw of the needles. The needles are bowed slightly so that they frictionally engage in their slots in the needle cylinder.
