Abstract

Normally liquid hydrocarbon fuels of improved resistance to deterioration due to microorganisms comprise a petroleum middle distillate fuel and an effective amount of an ester of 2-haloacetoacetic acid, said ester having the formula <FORM:1022877/C4-C5/1> where X represents bromine or chlorine, and Y represents a C1- 20 aliphatic group. Several such esters are specified, typical being 2-methoxyethyl 2-chloroacetoacetate and dodecyl 2-chloroacetoacetate. All types of middle distillate fuel are included, and they may contain conventional additives, e.g. an anti-icing additive which is a mixture of 98 weight per cent methyl carbitol and 2 weight per cent ethylene glycol.
