Abstract
1,021,559. Seals. INGERSOLL-RAND CO. Aug. 24, 1964 [Sept. 6, 1963; Oct. 4, 1963], No. 34607/64. Heading F2B. A seal for a plunger 14 of a compressor or pump comprises a ring 20 which is of predetermined modulus of elasticity and provided with predetermined inner and outer surface areas so that fluid pressure P 0 acting on the outer surface and fluid pressure P i acting on the inner surface cause a predetermined dynamic elastic deformation C, Fig. 6 of the ring to reduce the clearance between the ring and plunger without causing engagement. The ring is held in position by a cup 22 and cover 24. Cemented tungsten carbide may be used as the material for high pressure conditions. The inner and outer surfaces may be tapered, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), to compensate for deformation and, if desired, the ring may be formed in two segments 34, Figs. 9A and 9B (not shown), held together by a garter spring 38. Several rings may be employed in series along the plunger so that the fluid pressure is reduced step-by-step.
