Abstract
1,019,664. Coated paper. EASTMAN KODAK CO. Sept. 18, 1962 [Sept. 18, 1961], No. 35568/62. Heading B2E. [Also in Division G2] A polymer-coated paper comprises a paper base, a synthetic polymer coating on the paper, and an antistatic agent in the body of the paper, on the surface thereof and between the paper and the polymer coating, or on the other surface of the paper. The polymer coating may be on both sides of the paper, the antistatic agent being in the body of the paper or on a surface thereof and between the paper and one of the polymer coatings. The polymercoated paper may be produced by impregnating or coating the paper with the antistatic agent and then coating the paper on one side at least with a layer of synthetic polymer. The polymer may be a poly-alpha-olefin wherein the olefin contains 2-10 carbon atoms, e.g. polyethylene, polypropylene, or a copolymer of ethylene and propylene, polyester, polyamide, polyacetal, polycarbonate, or a cellulose derivative e.g. cellulose ester or ether. The polymer coating may be from 0À4-0À6 mils thick. The antistatic agent may be the sodium salt of naphthalene sulphonic acid, which may be present from 0À6-1À5 pounds per 1000 sq. feet of paper, sodium sulphate, salts of organic compounds, such as the alkali metal and ammonium salts of the condensation products of an aldehyde e.g. formaldehyde, with naphthalene sulphonic acids; triethanolamine oleate and stearate, polyalkylene polyamine derivatives, oxyalkylene amine derivatives of phosphorus, polyacrylyoxyalkyl trialkyl ammonium alkyl sulphate salts, diethanolamine salts of phosphate esters, hydroxyethers, polyhydroxy alcohols, or carbon black. A light sensitive photographic silver halide emulsion layer may be applied to the, or one of the, polymer coatings to produce a photographic paper. Prior to the application of the emulsion layer, the polymer coating may be treated, for example, by electron bombardment, flame treatment, oxidation using sulphuric acid-bichromate solution, peroxides and the like; by subbing using colloidal silica or zirconia; or by incorporating silica of larger than colloidal size in the polymer surface.
