Heading G5J In a keyboard instrument where each reed or similar sound generator is plucked, the plectrum is carried on a lever arm 2a-2b and plucks the reed on the upward movement of the arm, but on the downward movement the arm rocks sideways so the plectrum misses the reed. The lever arm initially rests on a lifter 12 on the key 13, but after the arm has risen and plucked the reed the screw 10, on meeting the surface of the arm immediately below the cam surface 8, pushes the arm off the left hand end of the lifter. The plectrum is thus rocked sideways and held clear of the reed as the arm is pulled back by spring 9 into its initial position. Upon release of the key the lever-arm resumes its rest position on the lifter. By rotating the eccentrically mounted plectrum to enable more of the plectrum to make contact with the reed and by adjusting the rise height of the lever arm by screw 10(a) the intensity of the sound produced by each reed can be adjusted. Depression of the key also lifts the damper 16 off the reed by means of lever 20 and arm 15. Lever 18 can lift all the dampers off the reeds independently of the keys and lever 20(a) can render the damper mechanism inoperative.
