The finger-board of a stringed instrument comprises a plurality of electrical switch means, each arranged to be operable by the action of stopping a string. In a guitar or like instrument, with or without electrical amplification, each switch means may consist of a contact mounted in a fret so as to be engageable by the associated metal string, or it may be a pressureoperated switch mounted between adjacent frets. Operation of a switch means causes an electrophonic instrument to sound a corresponding note. There may be either a single electrophonic instrument associated with the stringed instrument or a separate one for each string, each with its own stop switches and other controls. The finger-board may carry additional switch means corresponding to the notes sounded by the open strings.
