Abstract
1,018,968. Tiling units. HENRY HAWKINS Ltd. Aug. 11, 1964 [Aug. 13, 1963], No. 31839/63. Heading E1B. [Also in Division B5] A preformed tiling unit for application to a roof or wall comprises a row of roofing tiles A adhered to a band B of rigid synthetic foam (e.g. foamed polyurethane) in which is embedded a wooden or other lath C. The unit may be secured by nails passing through the lath C and tile holes D, the foam bands B of successive courses abutting to form an insulation layer. During manufacture of the unit tiles A, Fig. 2 (not shown), and lath C are laid in a wooden trough E and the ingredients of the foam B are poured thereover before closure of a hinged lid G carrying clamping battens J, K. The foam B is thus flush with the tile nibs I. In a modification the foam extends beyond the nibs to provide a rainwater check. A preformed panel of tiles may be formed by successive moulding of several bands B so that they adhere together. Alternatively a panel may be formed by hanging tiles A, Fig. 3 (not shown), on rows of laths L, secured to a wooden rectangular or other frame M, and then covering the backs of the tiles and laths with foam N. If desired wider tiles may be used at the ends of alternate courses to provide a uniform panel. Roofing units for application to horizontal steel frames members of a building comprise tiling panels, Fig. 5 (not shown) on triangular underframes to provide a pitched roof.
