Abstract

1,018,294. Optical masers. MINISTER OF AVIATION. Oct. 26, 1962 [Oct. 9, 1961], No. 36168/61. Heading H3B. The crystal element 1 of an optical maser is located between two plain mirrors which may be optically flat silvered glass plates 2, 3 and the spaces between the glass plates on the crystal end surfaces are filled with material 4 having substantially the same refractive index as the crystal. Plate 2 is wholly reflecting and plate 3 is 99% reflecting. If the crystal is ruby, the filling material may be di-iodomethane to which is added either sulphur or iodobenzene. A filling of aqueous sucrose may be used with a crystal of magnesium fluoride. The viscosity of the filling may be sufficient to retain it between the mirror and the crystal. In an alternative arrangement, the crystal is immersed in a box of filling liquid, the ends of the boss constituting the plane mirrors.
