1,262,335. Light modulation. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 3 April, 1969 [6 April, 1968], No. 17581/69. Heading H4F. [Also in Division G2] A digital focal length modulator has a plurality of stages which are arranged in succession along the optical axis and which each comprise an electro-optical polarization switch and a birefringent lens, and is characterized that in one, or a plurality, or all, of the stages, there are provided at least two birefringent lenses arranged one behind the other with the optic axes of the material of the two lenses normal to one another and normal to the principal planes of the lenses, while the adjacent faces of the lenses are curved in the same sense, i.e. they may be complementary, but not necessarily. The focal lengths of the lenses decrease by a factor of two at each stage and if the end surfaces of each lens combination are planar, the locations of the foci are substantially independent of changes in the refractive index of the ambient medium due to temperature, and the foci are spread equally about a mean position, Fig. 2 (not shown). A biconcave-binconvex-biconcave three element lens combination is shown in Fig. 4 (not shown).
