Abstract
1,017,833. Fine crÛping of paper and like web material. BIRD MACHINE CO. & R. R. WALTON. Aug. 21,1962 [Aug. 25,1961], No. 32116/62. Headings D1S and D2B. [Also in Division B6] A very fine crepe effect is imparted to a travelling web of material such as paper, textile fabric, plastic film, woven metal or metal foil by a process in which the material is first corrugated and the corrugations subsequently crushed, the corrugations being supported sufficiently during the crushing stage to avoid creasing or pleating of the material. The supporting of the corrugations may be achieved either by limiting their dimensions so that they are self-supporting or by using a crushing nip having a corrugated form of slightly less height than that of the corrugated web of material so that the corrugations are supported during crushing. In the latter version of the process a series of pairs of crushing rolls of successively reduced corrugation height may be used (Figs. 10-17 not shown). When the support is derived from the web itself, the web 20 of paper or other material is unwound from a roll 16 and passes from the convex to the concave side of a curved axis roll 24 composed of discs 26 which serves to gather the material into corrugations before it passes between two pairs 34, 36 and 35, 37 of intermeshing helically grooved rolls which shape the longitudinal corrugations in the web. The latter are crushed in passing through the nip of a smooth roll 236 and a resilient roll 234 to form the desired fine crepe effect. The material may be subsequently creped in the other direction by passage between intermeshing pinion-type rolls 238, 239 which form transverse corrugations in the web which are then crushed by the two pairs 240, 241 and 242, 243, of smooth rolls.
