Abstract

[Also in Division F4] A water-cooled skewback with a seamless furnace side comprises a one-piece steel plate having a downwardly and inwardly inclined portion 11 for supporting the furnace roof 2, an integrally disposed horizontal portion 13 forming a base which rests on the furnace wall 1 and an upwardly directed portion 14. A flat plate 6 is welded horizontally to portion 14 at 15 and to the portion 11 at 16 and a further vertical portion 7 is welded to portion 14 at 18 and to portion 11 at 20, triangular end-plates are welded in place to complete the two watertight chambers 23, 26 through which water is circulated via inlets 22, 25 and outlets 24, 27 (see also Fig. 2, not shown). As shown in Fig. 1 the unit has an upper angled portion 9, 10, but this may be dispensed with as in Fig. 5 and the end of the portion 11 may be welded to the vertical portion 7a at 20a.
