Abstract

A trilobal synthetic textile filament has a triskelion cross-section. The three brances of the cross-section may be equally spaced about the centre thereof and are uniformly bent to the same extent in one direction, i.e. all three in a clockwise or an anticlockwise direction, about the centre of the triskelion cross-section, the filament having threefold axial symmetry and presenting no plane of symmetry. The trilobal filaments may have a deviation coefficient of 1.10 to 1.85 and the spinneret plate orifices may have a D.C. of 2.2 to 4.2. The D.C. is defined as the quotient of the perimeter of a given filament cross-section or spinneret plate orifice and the perimeter of a circle having the same area as the cross-sectional area of the given filament or orifice. A threadline may be composed of a number of filaments of triskelion cross-section, a portion of the filaments having cross-sections in which the three branches are all bent in a clockwise direction and the other filaments having cross-sections in which the three branches are all bent in an anticlockwise direction. A threadline composed of a number of the filaments of the invention may be textured by conventional procedures, e.g. by the use of a turbulent fluid, a stuffer-box, twist-set crimping or a hot-stretch gearquench process.
