Abstract

1,017,063. Retractive switches; snap-action switches. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. Nov. 16, 1962 [July 26, 1962], No. 28823/62. Heading H2B. An electric limit switch, with a switching member 1 actuated by an over-centre spring arrangement comprising a rocker lever 5 and a roller 3 loaded by a spring 18, and having locking pawls 7, 8 has an actuating arm 9, with abutment surfaces 17 rotatable with it, which engage end faces of the forked portion 16 of the lever 5 to rotate the lever and thus actuate the switch. The sides of the recess 15 in the lever 5 and the circular portion 14 of the boss 11 act as stop surfaces to limit the terminal positions of the lever 5 without limiting the rotation of the arm 9. A helical spring 21 encircles the boss 11, with its two ends 19, 20 straddling a dog 22 on the boss 11 and a stop 23 in the switch housing 24, to ensure that the lever 9 assumes a predetermined end position. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the centring spring arrangement on the actuating lever is modified so that it only becomes effective on excess movement of the lever. In addition the locking pawls are stepped and the over-centre spring-loaded roller is replaced by a flat-ended plunger so that switching member, at each change-over, is first moved to and held in a central, neutral position from which it may subsequently be moved by completion of the movement of the rocker lever. With this arrangement the actuating lever remains in whichever position it was last set.
