Abstract
1283535 Inert switches; retractive switches JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 20 Nov 1969 [6 Dec 1968] 58157/68 Heading H1N A switch includes an operating member coupled to an operating lever 19 and movable by lever 19 from an inoperative position 'to at least one operative in which a circuit "between a pair of terminals on :the switch is completed, operating lever 19 being movable 'additionally in a different plane, from an inoperative position to a position in which it causes the aforementioned circuit between the pair of terminals to be completed. The operating -member is in two parts, a first part 14 and ;a second part 25. 'The first part 14 has a central portion 15, two arms 16, 17, an integral bearing bush 15a engaging a bearing 13 in body l l, anda pair of arcuate flanges 20 engaging body 11 and providing a second bearing. Arms 16, 17 'have spring loaded balls engaging-cam surfaces on the "body to locate the switch positions, which include a central inoperative position and two outer operative positions. Arm 16 also carries at its end resilient contacts 18. Operating lever 19 is secured to rectangular block 21 located in a diametrically extending slot in bush 15a by a pin 22 extending through bush 15a and block 21. Integral with block 21 is a post 23 located within a rectangular slot in central portion 15 and also through a central hole 26 in the second part 25 of the operating member, and post 23 carries a spring loaded ball 24a which normally seats in a hole 33 in base 32 which carries printed circuit fixed contacts. Second part 25 is inserted about a lug in a hole in arm 16 and carries a second set of resilient contacts 27 and has a groove containing a compression spring acting against a post upstanding from arm 17 so as to urge part 25 against one of the flanges 20. In operation, if the operating lever 19 is moved clockwise or anticlockwise looking at Fig. 1 it acts through block 21 and bush 15a to move the first part 14 angularly to an operative position, the second part 25 following with it. The parts 14, 25 remain in the position to which they are moved. If parts 14 and 25 are in the central position and operating lever 19 is moved backwards looking at Fig. 1 away from base 32 block 21 moves angularly about pin 22 and post 23 moves part 25 about its pivot to complete the same circuit as when lever 19 is moved anticlockwise in its other phase i.e. contacts 27; when lever 19 is released it is moved back to its original position by the compression spring assisted by spring loaded ball 24a. The switch is intended for use to control windscreen wipers in a motor vehicle.
