A valve seating 16 comprises a spirallywound metal strip 19 and an interleaved spiral or spirals 20 of a filler such as asbestos or p.t.f.e. The spiral may be wound on a rigid inner ring 21 and may be retained by an outer ring 24 of p.t.f.e. The seating is mounted in a recess in the housing but may be arranged in the closure member. The ring may be used in various types of valves such as a tapered gate valve, as shown, a spherical plug valve, a single beat valve or a butterfly valve.
