Abstract
Resinous condensation products are obtained by reacting together an aromatic hydrocarbon and formaldehyde in the presence of a catalytic amount of a mixture of formic acid and an acid stronger than formic acid. The hydrocarbon may be m-xylene, xylol, naphthalene, an alkyl naphthalene, cumene, durene, 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, tetralin, acenaphthene, phenanthrene or anthracene. The acid stronger than formic acid may be phosphoric, chloromaleic, perchloric, p-toluene sulphonic, sulphoacetic or methane sulphonic acid. The acid mixture may contain from 4 to 80% by weight of the stronger acid. Examples are given.
