Abstract
Compositions suitable for protective coatings comprise a petroleum wax, a copolymer of an alkene and an ester of an unsaturated alcohol and a carboxylic acid or a mixed alkene copolymer, and an oil, the proportions of wax, copolymer and oil being such that the compositions are capable of bleeding oil. The wax may be a paraffin or microcrystalline wax, and may be present partly or wholly as petrolatum. The oil may be a refined mineral oil, and the compositions may also comprise antioxidants, e.g. hindered phenols, and corrosion inhibitors. The compositions may be applied to high voltage electrical insulators.ALSO:Compositions suitable for protective coatings comprise a petroleum wax, a copolymer of an alkene and an ester of an unsaturated alcohol and a carboxylic acid or a mixed alkene copolymer, and an oil, the wax, copolymer and oil being present in such proportions that the composition is capable of bleeding oil. The wax may be a paraffin wax or a microcrystalline wax, and may be present wholly or partly as petrolatum. The copolymer may be a vinyl acetate/ethylene copolymer or an ethylene/propylene copolymer. The oil may be a refined mineral oil. The compositions may also comprise antioxidants, e.g. hindered phenols, and, where intended for application to metal substrates, corrosion inhibitors. The compositions may be applied, e.g. by melt dipping, to high voltage insulators. Examples describe compositions comprising vinyl acetate/ethylene copolymers and (1) petrolatum, microcrystalline wax and mineral lubricating oil, (2) petrolatum and transformer oil, (3) and (6) petrolatum and mineral lubricating oil and (4), (5) and (7) microcrystalline wax and mineral lubricating oil; and comprising ethylene/propylene copolymers and (8) and (10) paraffin wax and mineral lubricating oil, (9) microcrystalline wax and mineral lubricating oil, and mineral lubricating oil together with (11) refined paraffin wax and petrolatum and (12) microcrystalline wax.ALSO:Substrates may be coated with protective coating compositions comprising a petroleum wax, a copolymer of an alkene and an ester of an unsaturated alcohol and a carboxylic acid or a mixed alkene copolymer, and an oil, the wax, copolymer and oil being present in such proportions that the composition is capable of bleeding oil. The compositions may also comprise antioxidants and, when applied to metals, corrosion inhibitors. The compositions may be applied, e.g. by melt dipping, to high voltage electrical insulators, and examples describe the coating of such insulators with compositions comprising vinyl acetate/ethylene copolymers and (1) petrolatum, microcrystalline wax and mineral lubricating oil, (2) petrolatum and transformer oil, (3 and 6) petrolatum and mineral lubricating oil, and (4, 5 and 7) microcrystalline wax and mineral lubricating oil; and comprising ethylene/propylene copolymers mineral lubricating oil and (8 and 10) paraffin wax, (9 and 12) microcrystalline wax and (11) refined paraffin wax and petrolatum.
