Abstract
An aqueous etch composition for paper base planographic printing masters comprises an anionic macromolecular colloidal polyelectrolyte containing a high proportion of dissociable anionic groupgs having a pH of at least 5 but less than 7, containing a humectant and an inert inorganic colloid. The humectant may be glycerol, diethylene or triethylene glycol, sorbitol or mannitol and the inert inorganic colloidal material may be colloidal silica, stannic acid, metasilicic acid on fluorosilicic acid which may be in the form of an alkali metal or ammonium salt. The polyelectrolyte may be a naturally occurring gum or polysaccharide or a carboxymethyl derivative thereof, e.g. gum arabic, gum tragacanth, gum karaya, pectin, guar gum and alginic acid and its salts may be used. In addition polymers of acrylic acid of the general formula CH2=CR.COOH, where R is a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, or a salt of said polymer, may also be present. In the examples sodium alginate powder, gum tragacanth and gum guar are the polyelectrolytes used when the acrylic polymers are not employed.ALSO:An aqueous etch composition for paper base planographic printing masters comprises an anionic macromolecular colloidal polyelectrolyte containing a high proportion of dissociable anionic groups having a pH of at least 5 but less than 7, containing a humectant and an inert organic colloid. Suitable humectants and inert inorganic colloids are as listed in Specification 1,013,944. The anionic colloidal polyelectrolyte may be a polymer of acrylic acid of the general formula CH2=CR.COOH where R is a hydrogen or a halogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, or a salt of said polymer as in Specification 1,013,944. In place of or in addition to said acrylic polymers a naturally occurring gum or polysaccharide or a carboxymethyl derivative thereof may be used, e.g. gum arabic, gum tragacanth, gum karaya, pectin, guar gum and alginic acid and its salts may be used.
