Abstract
An aqueous etch solution for preparing imaged paper base masters for use in planographic printing processes contains a polymer of an acrylic acid of the general formula CH2=CR.COOH where R is hydrogen or a halogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, or a salt of said polymer, containing a high proportion of dissociable anionic groups. Preferably the polymer of acrylic acid contains one carboxyl group for each 50 to 1200 units of molecular weight and the preferred polymer is polyacrylic acid itself or a salt thereof, e.g. an alkali metal or ammonium salt. The pH of the aqueous solution is preferably less than 7 and greater than 5 and is adjusted with phosphoric acid or ammonia. Preferably a humectant such as glycerol, diethylene or triethylene glycol, sorbitol or mannitol is added to the solution. Inert organic colloidal material may also be present, e.g. colloidal silica, stannic acid, metasilicic acid and fluorosilicic acid may be added. Examples are given.
