Abstract
1,012,989. Ironing machines. G. M. PFAFF A. G. Feb. 7, 1964 [Feb. 9, 1963], No. 5275/64. Heading D1A [Also in Division F2] In an ironing machine in which articles are fed over a guide 10 between an ironing roller 1 and a stationary beating pad 9, a motor or the like according to its direction of rotation drives either the roller 1 or a mechanism including a cam and follower which during alternate half turns of the cam causes the roller 1 to move into and out of engagement with the heating pad 9. As shown, roller 1 is mounted on the ends of arms 2, 3 mounted on a hollow shaft 5 rotatably mounted in a housing 6 carrying a support 8 for an electrically heated curved pad 9 and a biased feeding board 10. The temperature of pad 9 is indicated and controlled by thermometer 3 and a member 14 respectively. Within housing 6 is a reversible A. C. motor 15 with a shaft 16 carrying a pinion 17 meshing with a ring gear 18, further gearing being provided if necessary to reduce the speed. Gear 18 is coaxial with a shaft 19 carrying a pinion 20 and a sleeve 21 connected respectively with roller guides 23, 22 within gear 18. Wedge shaped peripheral recesses in the guides 23, 22 contain rollers 25, 24 so that rotation of gear 18 in one direction rotates guide 22 whereas rotation in the other direction rotates guide 23. Pinion 20 drives, through gears 28, 29, 31, a shaft 30 rotatably supported in tube 5 which, through pulleys 32 and 33 and belt 34 enclosed in arm 2, rotate roller 1. An eccentric 35 secured to sleeve 21 co-operates with a spring-biased roller 37 carried on a pivot 36 connecting two flat bars 39 to a forked element 40 pivoted to a further forked element 40 pivoted to a further forked element 43. Elements 40 and 43 are adjustably connected by a nut 42 and bolt 41 and are held apart by compression spring 44, element 43 being connected to the lower end of an actuating arm 46 whose upper end is secured to tube 5. Bars 39 are connected by a bolt 49 which slides in slots 47 in plates 48 and carries a roller 50 which co-operates with an eccentric 51 carried on a shaft 52 manually rotatable to move bolt 49 in slots 47. Alternative clutch arrangements may be used such as that shown in Fig. 6 wherein eccentric 35 is secured to a sleeve 60 having coupling teeth 61 carried on shaft 19 on which is also mounted a pinion 62 with coupling teeth 63 there being between sleeve 60 and pinion 62 a sleeve 64 on which a coupling sleeve 69 is axially slidable. Sleeve 69 is driven through spiral gearing by the motor and is slidable to engage coupling teeth thereon either with sleeve 60 or with pinion 62 by the action of thus gearing. In operation guide board 10 is depressed to a low position III which, through the electric control system causes rotation of motor 15 in the direction in which it causes gear 18 to rotate sleeve 21 and hence eccentric 35 so that roller 1 is moved into engagement with pad 9. Feeding board 10 is returned by spring 12 to initial position I and motor stops and is restarted in the opposite direction to rotate roller 1. Roller 1 may be stopped temporarily by pressing board 10 to intermediate position II. Roller 1 is returned to inoperative position by depressing board 10 to position III.
