Abstract

<PICT:1012452/C6-C7/1> <PICT:1012452/C6-C7/2> A method of making a mould for the manufacture of optical shields having a grooved profile for removing the lines in television pictures comprises cutting ahelical groove into a metallic cylinder and electroplating the grooved cylinder so formed to remove the surface roughness. Grooves as shown in Fig. 3 are coated in an electroplating bath with a thin layer of a metal such as nickel to a thickness of 20 microns. An average current density of 2-3 amps./square decimetre are used. For the grooves shown in Fig. 4 a current density of 4-6 amps./square decimetre is used to apply 20 layers to produce a total thickness of 200 microns and to produce the subsequent deforming defect. The grooved surface of the cylinder may be detached and opened flat after the cutting operation has been performed.
