1,012,432. Feeding cables to movable machines; tubular chains. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd. Feb. 22, 1962 [Nov. 25, 1960], No. 40613/60. Headings B8A and B8B. In an arrangement for feeding power supplies to a longwall mining machine, supply cables and/or flexible pipes are supported by a chain connected at one end to a fixed point 33, Fig. 6, and at the other to the movable machine 20 which, in use, reciprocates over a linear path twice the length of the chain with the point 33 adjacent the middle of the path. The chain runs in a channel (not shown) which provides lateral guiding for both upper and lower runs 23, 24 of the chain but which directly supports only the lower run 24, the upper run 23 sliding over the lower run. To permit this, the chain links 1 (see Fig. 4) are of U-shaped cross-section with the limbs of the U's extending horizontally and laterally of the chain run. Such links may be interconnected directly as in Fig. 10-which is a plan view in which the limbs of the U- shaped links are the plates 42 and the bases of the U-shaped links are the tongued-and-grooved portions 43 interconnected by the pins 48. They may alternatively be interconnected in the manner of Fig. 1, in which the U-shaped links 2 are joined by parallel plate links 3 and pins 4. Each end link of the chain is preferably attached to its anchorage at 33 or 20 by a swivel link which can swing through substantially 180 degrees about a horizontal axis normal to the direction of movement of the machine 20, to allow for free reversal of the direction in which the chain extends from its anchorage.
