Abstract

Terpene-phenol condensation products of -OH content 7.5-8.0% and M.W. 330-360 are produced by adding a p-menthadiene, or a terpene convertible thereto under the reaction conditions, to a mixture comprising (a) phenol which may be substituted with 1 to 3 C1- 4-alkyl groups (2.25-10 moles per mole of terpene) and (b) BF3 and/or H2SO4, at - 10 DEG to 15 DEG C. The catalyst (b) may be a molecular compound of BF3 with an ether, alcohol, ester, acid or phenol. Preferred reactants are phenol, the cresols, dipentene, limonene and alpha-pinene, but a number of others are listed. The major constituents of the products are stated to be terpene diphenols and diterpene diphenols. Specification 1,012,046 is referred to.
