Abstract

The invention comprises ketals derived from aliphatic alcohols and ketones of formula <FORM:1055478/C2/1> wherein R is C1- 4 alkyl, and a process for making them by reacting the ketone with an aliphatic alcohol in presence of a catalytic amount of strong acid. Specified alcohols are MeOH, EtOH, PrOH, i-PrOH, BuOH and ethylene and propylene glycols. The ketals may be after-treated to give the corresponding bicyclodecene-3-monoethers; e.g. the dimethyl ketal of the ketone, where R=Me, on heating with p-toluenesulphonic acid followed by neutralization and fractionation, gave a mixture of the corresponding 2- and 3-ene-3-monomethyl ethers.ALSO:Perfume compositions comprise ketals derived from aliphatic alcohols and ketones of formula <FORM:1055478/A5-A6/1> wherein R is C1-4 alkyl, together with conventional ingredients. The corresponding bicyclodecene-3-monoethers may alternatively be used.
