Abstract

A process for the manufacture of foamed products from granular thermoplastic plastic containing blowing agent, especially granular polystyrene, which is prefoamed by supplying heat and, after storage, is bonded in moulds by supplying heat once more, is characterized in that granular plastic is employed which is provided prior to the prefoaming operation with a coating impermeable to the blowing agent at the temperatures occurring during conveyance or storage of the granular material. The material used for coating may be one which is burst or rendered permeable in the prefoaming or may alternatively be such that diffusion of the foaming agent is also prevented during the prefoaming. A coating which becomes adhesive at the temperature used in the moulding (to act as a bonding layer between the particles), or is decomposed by moisture, or is hardened by the application of heat can also be used. In the examples the granules used are of polystyrene containing dichlorodifluoromethane as blowing agent and coated with (1) polyvinyl acetate and hardener; (2) and (3) polyvinyl acetate in various amounts; (4) methyl cellulose and carboxymethyl cellulose. Alginate and gum arabic are also mentioned as coating materials.ALSO:A granular thermoplastic synthetic polymer containing a blowing p agent, for use in the manufacture of foamed products, is provided (prior to prefoaming) with a coating impermeable to the blowing agent at the temperatures occurring during storage or conveyance of the granular material.
