Abstract

1,011,281. Packaging by rolling. COMPAGNIE DE SAINT-GOBAIN. August 4, 1964 [August 5, 1963], No. 31671/64. Heading B8C. As a sheet 10 (Fig. 1) is wrapped around the rolled strip 40, it tears from the main web 5 along a line of weakness 27, and is then secured about the roll by glue provided adjacent the line 27. In the apparatus described, the strip 1 is rolled up by two conveyers 3, 4 whilst blades 21 and glue guns 24 provide stationary web 10 with firstly a line of weakness 27, and then adjacent to that a line of glue. Movement of the trailing edge of the strip 1 past a switch 28 releases a brake 6 on the roll of wrapping material 5 and activates the feed rollers 9 and 12. The leading edge of the sheet 10 is caught in the last convolution of the roll 40, and wrapped around the roll by the conveyers 3, 4. Movement of the sheet 10 is measured by the roller 15 and a ratchet system 17, which after the sheet has gone round the roll 40 at least once, operates the brake 6 on the roll 5. This causes the sheet 10 to tear from the main web 5 along the line of weakness 27. By this time the line of weakness is adjacent the roll 40, so that as it tears the leading edge of the next sheet 10 is held by spring blades 26. Further rotation of the belts 3, 4 causes the torn end of the sheet to be glued down and the entire belt 4 is then moved upwards and the wrapped roll ejected by an arm (not shown). The speed of rolling of the strip as well as the wrapping of the sheet about the rolled strip may be controlled by an electrical contact actuated by the element which cuts the strip. The invention is particularly applicable in the manufacture of mats made of glass fibres or similar mineral materials.
