Abstract
1,220,294. Feeding webs. HAUNI-WERKE KORBER & CO. K.G. 2 April, 1968 [31 Aug., 1967], No. 15780/68. Heading B8R. In apparatus for supplying paper strip from a roll to a tobacco-handling machine such as a cigarette-making machine, means are provided for (a) stopping or slowing down the machine when an expiring roll 3 reaches a certain diameter (b) then automatically splicing the leading end 16 of a replacement roll 6 to the strip 8 from the old roll 3 and (c) finally automatically restarting or accelerating the machine to a lower speed less than normal, the lower speed preventing excessive tension in the strip. Subsequently the machine speed is automatically increased to normal speed. The bearings of the roll spindle 2 are displaceably supported on a member 1 and form part of a carriage including a member 9a on which strip guide rollers 17a, 18a are freely mounted. The strip 8 passes around a further guide roller 52 and through splicing means 11 to feed rollers 46, 47 driven from the motor 48 driving the machine. The replacement roll 6 is mounted in a carriage similar to that carrying the roll 3, and its leading edge is placed over an anvil 34 with apertures on its surface facing the strip which apertures lead to a suction chamber 37 within the anvil. Closing of the apertures by the strip end 16 causes the vacuum in the chamber to close contacts 38 of a switch 39 the closure of which is essential to the stopping or slowing down of the machine and the operation of the splicing means. Above the anvil 34 is an electromagnet 31 which when energized moves a plunger 33 and knife 42 downwardly to effect a splice and cut off the old strip. Splicing is effected by crimping or by means of a piece of adhesive material placed on the leading end 16 of the new strip 13. A photo-electric device 53 senses the diameter of the roll 3 and when the diameter reaches a certain value, and the switch 38 is closed, a relay is energized to close switches which, through delay components cause in succession the motor 48 to be stopped or slowed down, the electromagnet 31 to be energized to effect the splice and cut off the old web, the motor 48 to be restarted or accelerated through lines 51 at a slow speed, and finally the motor to be connected to lines 49 so that it runs at normal speed. The carriage carrying the roll 3 can then be removed, and the other carriage carrying the roll 6 moved into the position formerly occupied by the first carriage. Braking web rolls.-The guide roller 17a is carried by an arm 19a pivoted about the axis of roller 18a and carrying a gear-wheel 22a at its pivoted end engaging a gear-wheel 23a mounted on the member 9a. A brake band 27a, fixed at one end and attached to the gear 23a at its other end, passes around a friction wheel 28a attached to the spindle 2. A spring 24a acts on the gear 23a in a direction to tension the band 27a but the action of the web tension on the arm 19a tends to slacken the brake band 27a. However, after the strip 8 has been cut by the knife 42, the spring 24a causes the brake band to operate to stop rotation of the spindle 2. At the same time, the arm 19a is pivoted to draw the end of strip 8 away from the splicer 11.
