Abstract

1,010,147. Opening and lap-forming machines. BIRFIELD ENGINEERING Ltd. March 8, 1962 [Dec. 9, 1960], No. 42379/60. Heading D1N. In order to eliminate or reduce the adverse effects of air currents developed by rotation of an opening drum and causing unevenness in a random fibre web, the drum is provided with a hood which forms a seal with a feed plate. A feed roll 3 operates in association with the feed plate 2 and their proximity is such that when fibres are being fed to the drum 1 the fibres seal the space between them. Teeth on the feel roll 3 are arranged to resist passage of fibres towards the more quickly moving drum 1. Opened fibres are removed by an air stream in a duct 8 from which they may pass to a further processing stage, such as condensing means forming pads. Fibres received by the feed roll 3 may have passed through a pre-opening device broadly similar to the above apparatus and including a condenser on to which the fibres are blown. The surface of a feed plate adjacent the pre-opening drum may be provided with combs. Specification 1,010,146 is referred to.
