Abstract

1,010,017. Gas blast switches. BROWN, BOVERI & CO. Ltd. Aug. 4, 1964 [July 31, 1963], No. 31175/64. Addition to 974,587. Heading H2B. A gas blast circuit breaker of the type described in the parent Specification is modified so as to be both opened and closed by means of gas pressure on the piston 6b so as to dispense with the strong closing spring. To open the breaker a valve 12 is drawn downwards to close an opening 10 and vent the chamber 15 behind piston 6b through opening 14. As the contacts open a blast of gas extinguishes the arc. Since the blast gas is supplied by a relatively narrow opening 8 the pressure in the contact chamber 9 falls. As soon as the arc is extinguished a series isolator is opened. Valve 12 is then returned rapidly to the position shown supplying pressure gas through the relatively large opening 10 to chamber 15 raising the pressure here above that in chamber 9 so that the contacts reclose. A light spring only thereafter holds the exhaust valve 5a closed.
