Abstract
The invention comprises organotin compounds of formula RR1R11SnO-X-O-Y where R, R1 and R11 are like or unlike aliphatic, araliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon groups, X is a divalent aromatic hydrocarbon or halohydrocarbon group or at least two such groups directly linked together by a divalent aliphatic, araliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon group and Y is a hydrogen, a metal atom or a group of formula RR1R11Sn-. Specified compounds include 1,4-bis-(triethyl-tinoxy) - tetrachlorobenzene, 1,4 - bis - (triethyltinoxy)-benzene and the tributyl homologues, 2,21 - bis - (tributyltinoxy) - 3,31,5,51, 6,61 - hexachlorodiphenyl - 1,11 - methane, 2,21-bis - (tributyltinoxy) - 5,51 - dichlorodiphenyl-1,11 - methane, and 1,4 - bis - (triphenyltinoxy) tetrachlorobenzene. The may be prepared by reacting a dihydric phenol of formula HO-X-OH with a trialkyltin oxide or hydroxide of formula (RR1R11Sn)2O or RR1R11SnOH respectively with removal of water as an azeotrope with benzene or toluene, by reacting an alkyl tin halide RR1R11SnHal with a mono- or dialkali metal salt of the dihydric phenol, or of the dihydric phenol itself in the presence of a halogen acceptor, or by treating a tin alkoxide of formula RR1R11SnO Alkyl with the dihydric phenol. In this last case it is preferred to employ the lower alkoxides such as the methoxide and ethoxide and to pass an inert gas such as nitrogen through the heated reaction mixture. Lists of suitable reactants are given. It is particularly preferred to use halogen substituted dihydric phenols, especially those in which the halogen is para to the hydroxyl group.
