Abstract
Sterols and tocopherols are separated from a mixture consisting of sterols, tocopherols, a monohydric aliphatic alcohol containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms and fatty acid esters of said alcohol by admixing sufficient water with said mixture to give a watered mixture having a water concentration in the range from 5 to 60% by weight of said watered mixture, establishing and maintaining the temperature of said watered mixture in a range of 0 DEG to 40 DEG C., whereby substantially all of said sterols in the watered mixture crystallize and removing substantially all of said crystallized sterols from said mixture, the liquid remaining comprising a two-phase mixture consisting of an aqueous phase consisting essentially of water and said alcohol and an oil phase consisting essentially of said tocopherols and said fatty acid ester of said alcohol, separating the oil phase from the aqueous phase, and separating the esters from the oil phase to leave a tocopherols concentrate. The initial reaction mixture may be an esterification reaction mixture derived from deodorized sludge which sludge is obtained from vegetable oils. Specification 774,855 is referred to.
