Abstract
Vegetable oils are refined by treatment with an aliphatic monobasic or dibasic acid anhydride wherein the alkyl groups contain from 2 to 6 carbon atoms. In particular the anhydride is used in the removal of gums from the oils by mixing them with water and separating the aqueous phase containing the gums from the oil. The anhydride may be added to the water, to the oil or to the oil-water mixture. The oils treated are preferably lecithin-bearing vegetable oils, such as soybean, cotton-seed, perilla, linseed, peanut, corn and tung oils. The anhydrides specified comprise acetic, propionic, butyric, maleic and succinic acid anhydrides alone or in admixture. Lower alkyl substituted derivatives may also be used such as monomethyl succinic acid anhydride and dimethyl succinic acid anhydride. The proportion of anhydride is preferably 0.05 to 1 per cent of the weight of the oil. The treatment may be effected at 40-100 DEG C., preferably 60-85 DEG C. The mixture of oil, water and anhydride is agitated for a suitable period and then centrifuged to separate the aqueous phase containing the gums and leave a break-free oil. The oil may then be bleached with clay or active carbon, and then deodorized with steam at elevated temperature and under vacuum to remove fatty acids and sterols.
