Abstract
1,006,871. Rollers in spinning etc. machines; treating fibres. EASTMAN KODAK CO. Feb. 15, 1963 [Feb. 20,1962], No. 6158/63. Headings DID and D1F. In conditioning crimped, continuous, filamentary tow (prepatory to its manufacture into cigarette filter-tips) by the pressure jet method of opening, the tow is fed under tension to the jet from a pair of driven rollers which pull it under tension through the nip of a pair of punch rollers to which it is fed from a tow supply. The conditioned tow is stated to be uniform both cross-sectionally and longitudinally. As shown, Fig. 2, a tow (with twist removed by a device 3) is withdrawn from a bale and passes over a cylindrical guide 1, through punch rollers in an assembly 21, through driven rollers 4 which may have three to ten times larger diameter than the punch rollers, it receives a treating agent e.g. liquid plasticiser, within an applicator 5, then passes through a jet 6 from which it is withdrawn by rollers 7 and may proceed to a filter-plug former (not shown). The rollers 4 pull the tow under tension through punch rolls and the jet 6 pulls the tow from rollers 4 under sufficient tension to prevent "blooming" thereof as it leaves these rollers, and within the jet the filaments are forced apart by the air under pressure. The ratio of weight to unit length of the tow fed to the jet is controlled by adjusting the speed of rollers 4 and the pressure on the punch rollers 36, 37, Fig. 3. The jet 6 is supplied with air through an automatic valve 18 and conduit 25 connected in the same air line 43, Fig. 3, as supplies air through a pressure reducer 45 to the bellows, in housings 39 and 42, by which the ends of the shaft of roller 37 are loaded: thus the pressure on rolls 36, 37, is automatically relieved if the air supply to jet 6 ceases. The bellows may be replaced by mechanical and/or electrical means (not shown). A motor 22 synchronously operates all the mechanisms of the apparatus, including pumps supplying the applicator 5, through chain or belt and sprocket drives, including a variable transmission device 23 for rollers 7. Specification 986,391 is referred to.
