Abstract

The invention comprises 4-(N1-acyl-sulphanilamido) -5,6-dimethoxy-pyrimidines and the preparation thereof by reacting a compound of the formula <FORM:1005736/C2/1> wherein R represents a nitro, arylazo, acylamino, alkoxycarbonylamino or aralkoxycarbonylamino group or a group of the formula -N = CH-R1 in which R1 represents an unsubstitute or alkyl or alkoxy substituted phenyl group, with an acylating agent to form an N1-acylated compound of the formula <FORM:1005736/C2/2> where Ac represents an acyl residue, and converting the R group into an amino group by reduction or hydrolysis as the case may require. Therapeutic compositions with high antibacterial action, e.g. in the form of tablets, dragees, capsules, suppositories, solutions, emulsions or suspensions for oral, topical or parenteral administration, comprise a 4-(N1-acyl-sulphonilamido) - 5,6 - dimethoxy - pyrimidine in admixture with a compatible pharmaceutical carrier.
